How long laser hair removal lasts and how to make the result last longer
How long laser hair removal lasts: how many sessions a course takes, the gaps between them, when a maintenance session is needed and what extends the result.

Getting rid of body hair without pain and for good used to be wishful thinking. Laser hair removal changed that — yet the question “how long does it actually last?” is still the very first one clients ask. The answer depends on three things: the quality of the device, whether you stick to the session plan, and the aftercare.
How long does the result of laser hair removal last?
After completing all the recommended sessions, the hair in the treated zone usually does not grow back. If some follicle regenerates, hair may start to grow again — but there is substantially less of it and it is lighter, finer and generally weaker.
So this is not a result for one season but a long-term change in the growth. The key word is “completed”: one or two sessions will not bring a lasting effect, and no serious provider will promise you that.
How does laser hair removal actually work?
The principle lies in destroying the hair follicle with heat. The beam is set to react to a particular colour — specifically to the pigment in the hair. The light penetrates the skin, travels along the pigmentation of the hair down to the root and destroys it.
That is exactly why the quality of the device is decisive. Older lasers could not regulate the wavelength so precisely and simply missed a lot of hair. The result then lasts only a few weeks and the treatment turns into a years-long process similar to waxing. We break down the differences between laser types on the page about our lasers.
Why does laser hair removal have to be repeated?
Because hair grows in cycles. Only about a quarter of the total growth is in its active phase at any one moment, and the laser sees only those follicles — when a follicle is “asleep”, no hair sprouts from it and the beam skips it.
When the active follicles move into the resting phase, the next quarter starts to grow. And so the renewal of the growth repeats in a loop. Sessions are therefore timed exactly to the moments when further follicles wake up. Your own discipline plays a role here too: constantly rescheduling outside the plan means missing the right window and leaving part of the follicles untreated.
How many sessions are needed and how long does the course take?
A complete course usually takes 5–8 sessions. The exact number is set by the specialist according to your phototype and the colour and density of your hair.
| Indicator | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended number of sessions in a complete course | 5–8 |
| Break between sessions | 4–8 weeks |
| Share of hair in the active growth phase | roughly a quarter of the growth |
| Reduction of hair after the first session | up to 20 % |
| Session length — small zones (upper lip, underarms, groin) | 5–20 minutes |
| Session length — large areas (legs, back, whole body) | 30–90 minutes |
| Maintenance session after completing the course | usually once a year, if needed |
| Rest from heavy sweating after a session | at least 2 days |
| Protection of treated skin from direct sun | 1 month |
When will I see the first result?
You will notice a reduction of up to 20 % of the hair after the very first application. The hair does not fall out all at once — it is released gradually over the following days and weeks.
So do not expect smooth skin the moment you leave the clinic. You will see the real change in the growth after the second and third sessions, when not only the number but also the strength and colour of the regrowing hair drop.
Will I need a maintenance session?
For most clients, what they have after completing the course is enough. People with a greater capacity for regeneration do come in after about a year for a single maintenance session, which finishes off a few surviving hairs.
That is one treatment a year, not a new course. The difference in time and cost compared with a lifetime of shaving is therefore fundamental.
What affects how long the result lasts?
Four factors decide: the quality of the device, the training of the operator, keeping to the intervals between sessions, and the aftercare.
- The device. Refurbished and cheap machines do not match top lasers — they miss part of the hair.
- The operator. Trained staff use the laser safely and effectively, understand the cyclical growth of hair and can time the sessions correctly. With an inexperienced operator there is even a risk of skin burns.
- Your attendance. A session outside the planned interval means a missed window of the active growth phase.
- Aftercare. Without it the risk of irritation rises and the whole plan is delayed.
What to do before and after a session so the result lasts as long as possible
Before a session there is an absolute stop on plucking hair — the laser needs both the follicle and the hair in order to see it. The evening before the treatment simply shave the zone as usual.
After a session:
- Avoid heavy sweating for at least two days — demanding sport, the sauna and hot baths can wait. Excessive sweating raises the risk of inflammation in more sensitive skin.
- Protect the treated skin from UV radiation for one month and use a cream with a high SPF. Sunbathing means both sweating and the possible appearance of pigment spots — and dealing with those then disrupts the regularity of the whole course.
- Do not use cosmetics on the first day after the application; afterwards choose natural moisturising products.
Detailed instructions for preparation and aftercare are in the laser hair removal FAQ.
Does laser hair removal work in summer too?
Yes. Today’s sensitive devices can distinguish the pigment of the hair from a tan on the skin, so we treat all year round.
The most comfortable period is nonetheless from autumn to spring. In the winter months there is no need to cover the treated skin with high-UV-filter creams or with clothing, so it is easier to keep to the recommended plan. After sun exposure you always have to wait at least a week — a fresh tan is not suitable for treatment.
Is a laser worth it compared with shaving and waxing?
In the long run, yes. Add up a lifetime of buying razors, softening gels and depilatory creams, plus regular visits for waxing, which keeps the skin smooth for a maximum of 14 days — the total is a multiple of the price of the recommended series of laser sessions.
To the finances add the time these methods take and the permanent trouble with ingrown hairs and irritation. A detailed comparison of all methods by durability, pain and price is in the article epilation vs depilation.
How do I recognise a provider where the result really lasts?
Ask about the specific type of device and why they will use it on you. Reputable providers state the type of their lasers and the expertise of their staff publicly; if something is missing, a follow-up question by e-mail or phone is entirely appropriate.
Also ask about the certification of the operator and whether the salon has at least one specialist with senior experience. At Laser Clinic we work with two lasers — the alexandrite Deka Motus AX Moveo and the diode LightSheer DUET — and set the right type and parameters individually according to your phototype at the free consultation. We have three branches in Prague (Vinohrady, Karlovo náměstí, Vysočany), open seven days a week from 9:00 to 21:00, and a rating of 4.7 from more than 275 reviews on Google. The prices of individual zones and of treating larger body areas are in the calculator on the homepage.

Frequently asked questions
After completing the whole recommended course, hair in the treated zone usually does not grow back. If some follicles do regenerate, the hair is markedly sparser, finer and lighter than the original growth.
A complete course usually takes 5–8 sessions with a 4–8 week break between them. Smaller zones such as the underarms need fewer, intimate areas usually more.
Hair grows in cycles and only about a quarter of the growth is in its active phase at any one moment. The laser only sees active follicles, so sessions are repeated at intervals when the next ones wake up.
People with a greater capacity for regeneration are recommended one maintenance session after about a year, which deals with a few surviving hairs. For most clients one treatment a year is enough, if it is needed at all.
You will notice a reduction of up to 20 % of the hair after the very first session. The hair does not fall out all at once but gradually over the following days and weeks.
