Epilation vs depilation: the difference and which method to choose

Epilation vs depilation explained: how they differ, how long shaving, wax, an epilator, IPL and a laser last, and which method pays off for which body zone.

Comparison of hair removal methods — razor, wax and laser

Removing unwanted hair is part of the weekly routine for plenty of women and men. There are many methods, but their names get mixed up in everyday speech and the difference between epilation and depilation is not obvious at first glance. This article compares all the main methods by durability, pain, price and suitability for individual zones.

What is the difference between epilation and depilation?

The difference lies in the depth at which the method works. Depilation removes only the visible part of the hair above the surface of the skin. Epilation removes the hair including the root, so the result lasts substantially longer.

Everything else follows from that. Depilation is generally less painful, but its effect is short-lived — the growth returns quickly. Epilation is more costly at the start and is often done professionally, but its result lasts long term and, in the case of a laser, permanently. In the long run it therefore tends to be more economical.

Why do people say “depilation with wax” when wax pulls out the root?

Because in everyday speech and in salon menus the names of the methods settled differently from the technical definition. Wax, sugar paste and an epilator all pull the hair out with the root — by the depth criterion this is epilation, even though people commonly talk about “depilation with wax”.

Do not let that confuse you. When choosing a method, do not ask about its name but about two things: how deep it works and how often it has to be repeated.

What is depilation and which methods belong to it?

Depilation is the process of removing visible hair from the surface of the skin. The root stays untouched, so the hair usually grows back within two days.

  • Shaving with a razor or a trimmer — the simplest and fastest method, which anyone can manage at home. It can irritate the skin, though, and the growth returns very quickly.
  • Depilatory cream — contains chemicals that dissolve the hair at the surface of the skin. The process is painless but may cause irritation and hypersensitivity. Creams are not recommended for intimate areas: they can disrupt the natural microflora and trigger inflammation.

What is epilation and which methods belong to it?

Epilation is the removal of hair from the root. New hair then grows more slowly and tends to be finer.

  • Laser hair removal — concentrated light travels along the pigment of the hair to the root and destroys it with heat. Suitable for various skin types and for all body zones.
  • IPL epilation — works with intense pulsed light energy. It is also painless, but achieving lasting results requires a larger number of repetitions.
  • Epilator — a rotating head with tweezers grips and pulls the hair out from the root. It is easily available, but hurts in sensitive zones and, when used incorrectly, causes irritation or ingrown hairs.
  • Electrolysis — an electric current destroys the root. The results are permanent, but the method can be painful and requires repeated visits. The specialist’s qualification is key: done badly, it risks pain, irritation and permanent scars.
  • Wax and sugar paste — applied to the skin and torn off together with the hair. Sugar paste tends to be slightly less painful than wax.

Which hair removal method lasts the longest?

Laser hair removal lasts the longest — after a completed course the hair in the treated zone usually does not grow back. Other methods have to be repeated at intervals from two days (shaving) to 4–6 weeks (wax, sugar paste, epilator).

Method Type by depth How it works How long it lasts Pain Where
Razor, trimmer Depilation Removes the hair at the skin surface The hair grows back usually within 2 days Low At home
Depilatory cream Depilation Chemically dissolves the hair at the surface A few days Painless, risk of irritation At home
Wax Epilation (commonly “depilation with wax”) Pulls the hair out with the root Smooth skin for about 14 days, repeat after 4–6 weeks Higher At home and in a salon
Sugar paste Epilation The same principle as wax About 14 days, repeat after 4–6 weeks Lower than wax At home and in a salon
Epilator Epilation Tweezers pull the hair out from the root Longer than after shaving, repeat after 4–6 weeks High in sensitive zones At home
IPL Light epilation Intense pulsed light energy A long-term result, requires more repetitions Low At home and in a salon
Electrolysis Current epilation An electric current destroys the root A permanent result Can be painful Only with a qualified specialist
Laser hair removal Light epilation Light travels along the pigment and destroys the root After a completed course the hair usually does not grow back; maintenance ~once a year Mild thanks to cooling Only at a clinic

Which method hurts the most?

The most painful tend to be an epilator on sensitive zones and electrolysis; the least unpleasant are shaving and depilatory creams. Laser hair removal is among the gentler ones, because modern devices have integrated cooling.

The perception of pain is individual, though, and a lot depends on the zone. The most sensitive are the intimate areas and the areas around bones — that is where you will feel the difference between methods most strongly. With a laser, most clients describe only a mild tingling or a feeling of warmth.

Which pays off more in terms of price?

Depilation has a low entry price but is paid for over a lifetime. Laser epilation costs more at the beginning because it requires a series of sessions, but once the course is completed it stops repeating.

Decide according to total cost, then, not the price of a single treatment. Add up what ten years of razors, shaving gels and foams, aftershave products and salon visits for waxing cost you — and only then compare that amount with the price of the recommended series of laser sessions.

Which methods cause ingrown hairs and irritation?

Ingrown hairs and irritated skin accompany above all shaving, epilators and wax. Laser hair removal solves the problem at the source, because it removes the follicle itself.

It is exactly this repeated mechanical irritation that lies behind the red spots appearing shortly after shaving — what can be avoided and how to treat irritated skin is covered in the article about rash after shaving.

How do you prepare for hair removal, whatever you choose?

Before home depilation or epilation, a gentle scrub and a warm shower help. Exfoliation reduces the risk of irritation and ingrowth, and warm water opens the pores and loosens the hair, making the procedure less painful.

Before a laser session a different rule applies: for four weeks beforehand the hair must not be plucked or removed with wax, because the laser needs both the follicle and the hair. Simply shave the zone the evening before your visit. The complete preparation and aftercare is summed up in the laser hair removal FAQ.

When should you choose laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal makes sense everywhere you already remove hair regularly and know you will never want it there. It pays off above all in zones you shave several times a week.

The method is suitable for all body areas — bikini, underarms, legs, arms and face — and is an alternative for those allergic to wax or to the chemicals in depilatory products. It does not require aggressive substances that irritate the skin. The condition is professional execution: a quality device and a trained operator. At Laser Clinic we work with two lasers — the alexandrite Deka Motus AX Moveo for lighter skin and finer hair, and the diode LightSheer DUET for darker or tanned skin and stronger growth. Which one suits you is determined at the free consultation; how long the result then lasts is covered in a separate article.

Frequently asked questions

Depilation removes only the visible part of the hair above the skin, epilation removes the hair together with its root. That is why the result of depilation lasts days, while the result of epilation lasts weeks — and with a laser, long term.

Wax pulls the hair out together with the root, so by definition it is epilation, even though people commonly say 'depilation with wax'. The decisive criterion is not the name of the method but the depth at which it works.

Laser hair removal lasts the longest: after a completed course the hair in the treated zone usually does not grow back and a maintenance session roughly once a year is enough. Wax and sugar paste keep the skin smooth for about 14 days, shaving for about two days.

Laser epilation has a higher entry cost because it requires several sessions at the clinic. In the long run it tends to be more economical, because it does not have to be repeated for a lifetime like shaving or waxing.

Ingrown hairs and irritation most often accompany shaving, epilators and wax — methods that mechanically break or pull out the hair. Laser hair removal removes this problem together with the follicle.
