Who is bothered by chest hair and why do they deal with it?

For men, the chest is one of the most frequently treated zones of all — right next to the back, the abdomen and the neck. The motivation is both practical and aesthetic: too much or asymmetrically growing hair, dense growth pushing out of an open shirt, easier hygiene, sport, and the simple fact that without the growth you feel more confident in a T-shirt, in swimwear and without it.

For women it is something else: mostly individual dark hairs around the areolas, that is in one of the most sensitive areas of the body. Some professions — athletes, models — need an immaculate look for work itself, but for most people it is simply about comfort and confidence.

Why does hair grow on the chest?

Behind hair growth on the chest stand above all hormones and genetics. In men, denser growth on the chest is a normal part of secondary sexual hair; in women it is more often a sign of hormonal imbalance worth having checked.

  • Genetics — density and structure of hair are inherited; some people grow markedly more on the chest than others.
  • Hormonal changes — natural in puberty, in adulthood they may signal an imbalance (for example an overproduction of testosterone).
  • Certain medication — hormonal contraception, corticosteroids, epilepsy medication, psoralens or minoxidil.
  • Illness — Cushing’s syndrome shows in women precisely as excessive hair growth on the chest; a thyroid disorder or polycystic ovary syndrome also play a role. You may also come across the term hypertrichosis — an inherited or acquired condition showing as excessive hair.
  • Excess weight and obesity — overall health and physical condition affect hair growth too.

If chest hair in a woman increases quickly or appears suddenly, consult a doctor. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic treatment — it removes the visible symptom but does not treat the hormonal cause. The same hormonal background often lies behind dark chin hair and hair on the belly.

How do you remove chest hair at home and where are the limits?

At home the chest is most often handled with shaving, wax or depilatory cream. None of these methods stops further growth — the skin stays smooth for days to weeks and then it all repeats, and on the large area of the chest with a considerable time cost.

Method How long it lasts What it brings
Shaving A few days Stubble, irritation, risk of ingrown hairs
Wax and sugar paste 4 to 6 weeks Painful, especially on the large chest area; redness on sensitive skin
Depilatory cream A few days Chemical components can irritate, the hair grows back fast
Laser hair removal Long term Several sessions and an investment at the start, then peace from the daily routine

It is particularly unpleasant around the areolas, where the skin is thin and sensitive — plucking and wax really do not belong here.

How does laser hair removal of the chest work?

The laser beam reaches the hair at its follicle and stops further growth. Treating the chest takes only a few minutes and you can leave right afterwards without restrictions — no recovery is needed.

Step by step:

  1. At the free consultation we go through your skin, the type of hair and choose the right device.
  2. Before the treatment the chest needs to be shaved — shave the area with a razor the day before.
  3. At the agreed appointment we settle you comfortably and expose the treated area to the laser.
  4. The pulses themselves are a matter of minutes, longer with very extensive growth.
  5. You leave straight away; the session repeats after 4 to 8 weeks so the laser catches hair in its active growth phase.

You need not fear pain. The beam is fast and precise — acting only in the hair follicle — and the device cools the treated spot at the same time, the alexandrite Motus AX down to −4 °C. The feeling of warmth is reliably compensated and most clients describe only a mild tingling.

At Laser Clinic we work with two lasers: the Italian alexandrite Deka Motus AX Moveo (755 nm) for lighter skin and finer hair, and the diode LightSheer DUET (approximately 805 nm), which penetrates deeper and is gentler on darker skin and stronger hair. Thanks to two wavelengths we handle hair of various shades and a darker phototype; the exception is snow-white hair without pigment. A fresh tan is still a reason to move the appointment, though — skip the sun and the solarium for two weeks before and after a session. How the devices differ is covered on the page about our lasers.

How many sessions are needed and what shows after the first one?

A complete course usually requires 5 to 8 sessions; for the chest the average is around six. Sparser growth and individual solitary hairs tend to be done sooner, while a dense male chest needs the whole course — it depends above all on how much hair is currently in its active growth phase.

Indicator Value
Complete course 5 to 8 sessions
Average for the chest around 6 sessions
Sparser growth and individual hairs fewer sessions
Interval between sessions 4 to 8 weeks
Length of one treatment a few minutes
Visible effect a noticeable part of the hair disappears after the first session

Thanks to the laser’s output a large part of the hair is destroyed in the very first session, so the treated area looks better immediately. The complete result comes only after the whole course, though — one session never reaches all the follicles at once. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic treatment: the goal is a long-term, marked reduction in growth, not a hundred-percent guarantee forever.

How much does removing chest hair cost?

The price is based on the size of the treated area, not on how dense your growth is. The amounts below are per session; we confirm the exact price according to the zone and extent at the free consultation.

Zone Price per session
Abdomen 2 500 CZK
Areolas 1 000 CZK
Upper back 2 500 CZK
Lower back 2 500 CZK
Sacrum 1 500 CZK
Underarms 1 000 CZK

For women, treating the area around the areolas is handled individually — we confirm the price at the free consultation according to the actual extent. The price list does not distinguish how large your chest actually is; for non-standard dimensions we always adjust the price individually. A complete overview of zones and prices for men is in the offer for men.

At first glance the amount may look high — until you add up what it replaces. A few sessions mean the end of the endless struggle with hair in the bathroom, of buying depilation supplies and booking salon appointments. And also the end of worrying that you forgot to shave, or wondering what (not) to wear.

How do you care for the skin after treating the chest?

Nothing complicated is needed after laser treatment of the chest. Use a cooling moisturiser as needed, avoid sunbathing and solariums for about two weeks and in summer protect the zone with SPF 50+. Otherwise your normal routine does not change — no recovery, no restrictions.

For the first hours after the procedure the skin tends to be red and may still hold remnants of dead hair, which soon fall out on their own — that is the normal course, not a complication. Avoid aggressive cosmetics and mechanical irritation of the treated area. The same rules apply to other zones, for example the underarms, which are often combined with the chest.

Can the chest be treated together with other zones?

Yes, and it makes obvious sense. The chest is most often combined with the abdomen and the area around the navel, or with the back — all in one appointment, which saves you time and the trip.

Combining zones makes the most sense for men in particular: chest, abdomen, back and neck form one visual whole and treating them separately is usually pointless. At Laser Clinic we welcome you in Prague at three branches (Vinohrady, Karlovo náměstí, Vysočany) seven days a week from 9:00 to 21:00. At the free, no-obligation consultation we choose the right laser, calculate the extent and tell you how many sessions you will need.

Yes, the chest needs to be shaved — we will ask you to prepare before the treatment. Shave the area with a razor the day before and do not pluck the hair with any epilation method for four weeks beforehand.

Treating the abdomen costs 2 500 CZK per session, the areolas 1 000 CZK. The price follows the size and extent of the treated zone, not gender. We confirm the exact extent at the free consultation.
