Chin hair: why it grows and how to get rid of it
Chin hair bothers women and men alike. We explain why it grows, how to remove it at home or with a laser, how many sessions you need and what laser hair removal of the chin costs.

Why does hair grow on the chin?
Fine hair covers the chin quite naturally in everyone and is no problem in itself. The problem starts where some of those hairs outgrow the rest and begin to stand out as individual dark solitaires — or gather into the formation commonly called a goatee. The usual culprits are hormonal changes linked to ageing or medication, and inherited predisposition; in men it is simply part of normal beard growth.
The chin is specific in that the problem is visible at first glance and you face it in the mirror every day. That is exactly why tweezers so often end up here — and exactly why that tends to be the start of a vicious circle.
Is chin hair in women related to hormones?
In women, excessive growth of dark hair on the chin tends to be linked to a hormonal imbalance — from hirsutism through polycystic ovary syndrome to the natural hormonal swings of puberty, pregnancy or menopause. If the growth appears suddenly or thickens quickly, consult a doctor: they can run tests, identify the cause and start the appropriate treatment.
We cover this topic in detail in a separate article about facial hair in women, where we go through the individual hormonal causes and what to do about them. Here we focus on the practical side — on removing the hair itself, which works the same way for women and men.
How do you remove chin hair at home?
At home, the chin is usually handled with tweezers, shaving, wax or depilatory cream. All of these methods remove either the visible part of the hair or the hair together with its root, but none of them can stop it from growing back — which is why they have to be repeated over and over.
| Method | How it works | Weak points |
|---|---|---|
| Tweezers | Pull out an individual hair along with the root | Painful; frequent plucking makes the hair stronger and irritates the surrounding skin |
| Shaving | Removes the visible part of the hair | The effect lasts a few days, with a risk of irritation and stubble |
| Wax and sugar paste | Tear the hair out with the roots | Painful; on sensitive facial skin they may cause redness |
| Depilatory cream | Chemically breaks down the keratin in the hair | The hair grows back fast and the cream may irritate sensitive skin |
| Home-use IPL device | Damages the base of the hair with light pulses | Substantially lower output than a professional laser, so a weaker and slower effect |
The most unpleasant thing about home methods is not the pain but the endlessness. A single black hair on the chin can resist the grip of tweezers in front of the mirror for years — and every pluck irritates the surrounding skin for nothing.
How does laser hair removal of the chin work?
Laser hair removal of the chin means reaching the hair follicle with a powerful beam that destroys its active part and reduces the likelihood of the hair growing back to a minimum. Unlike tweezers and wax, it does not deal with the consequence but with the hair’s very ability to regrow.
The process is simple:
- After you book, we go through your situation and agree on a tailored plan.
- On the day of the treatment we seat you comfortably and treat the chin with the device.
- On such a small zone the pulses themselves take only a few minutes.
- Straight afterwards you leave without any restrictions.
The device cools the skin at the same time as the pulse, so most clients describe only a light tingling; with a low pain threshold we also apply a numbing cream. Modern lasers work with different wavelengths and can therefore handle hair of various shades — the exception is snow-white hair, which lacks pigment. At Laser Clinic we choose between the Italian alexandrite Deka Motus AX Moveo (755 nm — lighter skin and fine hair) and the diode LightSheer DUET (approximately 805 nm — penetrates deeper, gentler on darker skin and stronger hair); we describe the differences on the page about our lasers.
The reputation that “lasers burn the skin” was earned by older devices. Today’s technology minimises the risk with three things at once: integrated cooling, precise targeting of the beam, and pulse speed, thanks to which the energy acts only where it should. The treatment is carried out by a trained specialist who sets the parameters according to your phototype — which is why a free consultation always precedes the first session. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, an acute skin infection or a fresh tan in the treated area are among the situations where we postpone the treatment.
How many sessions does the chin need?
The chin is one of the smallest and fastest zones to treat. When it is a few individual protruding hairs, one or two sessions are often enough — it mostly depends on whether we hit the right phase of the growth cycle. Denser growth and larger areas of the face need more patience.
| Extent | Indicative number of sessions |
|---|---|
| A few individual hairs on the chin | 1 to 2 |
| Denser growth on the chin | more sessions, specified at the consultation |
| Larger facial areas (upper lip, whole face) | 5 to 8 |
The reason larger areas require repeat visits lies in the biology of hair: the laser only reaches the follicles that are currently in their active growth phase, while the rest are “asleep”. That is why sessions are spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart — you wait for the next part of the growth to move into the active phase. With a single solitaire on the chin it is a gamble in the good sense of the word: if we hit the right phase the first time, it is done.
The upper lip requires more repeats than the chin precisely because the growth there is denser. Combining zones makes sense — the chin, the upper lip and the underarms are commonly handled in one appointment, which saves you both time and the trip. The pulses on the chin take a few minutes; the whole visit including preparation usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
How much does removing chin hair cost?
The price follows the size of the treated area. The amounts below are per session; we confirm the exact price according to the zone and extent at the free consultation.
| Zone | Price per session |
|---|---|
| Chin | 1 000 CZK |
| Upper lip | 1 000 CZK |
| Beard line on the neck | 1 000 CZK |
| Neck | 1 500 CZK |
| Full face + neck | 2 500 CZK |
Men often approach the chin differently from women — the goal is not to remove everything but to shape the beard line and the neck so the contour holds without daily touch-ups. You will find an overview of zones and prices for men in the offer for men, and the complete price list of facial zones in facial hair removal.
How do you care for the skin after treating the chin?
After laser treatment of the chin nothing special is needed — no recovery, no restrictions in your normal day. You can apply a soothing cream and for about two weeks avoid rushing into the sun or a solarium; in summer protect the zone with SPF 50+.
For a few hours after the procedure the skin may be red and may still hold remnants of dead hair, which soon fall out on their own. Before the treatment the usual rules of laser hair removal apply: shave the area with a razor the day before, do not pluck the hair with tweezers or remove it with wax beforehand (the laser needs the root in place), avoid sunbathing for two weeks, and come with clean skin without make-up. We use the same procedure for other zones as well — we describe it in the article about removing hair on the belly.
When should chin hair be discussed with a doctor?
When dark hairs on the chin appear suddenly, increase quickly or are accompanied by other symptoms — irregular periods, acne, weight changes — have the cause checked by a doctor. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic treatment: it removes the visible symptom but does not treat the hormonal background.
The ideal combination is therefore simple: deal with the cause at the doctor’s, and with the visible symptom at the laser. At Laser Clinic we welcome you in Prague at three branches (Vinohrady, Karlovo náměstí, Vysočany) every day from 9:00 to 21:00 — the consultation, at which we choose the right laser and the number of sessions, is free and without obligation.

Frequently asked questions
Most often it comes down to hormonal changes linked to age or medication, and to genetic predisposition. The laser does not care about the cause — it reliably reaches every follicle with enough pigment.
A few individual hairs on the chin are often resolved within one or two sessions. Denser growth and larger areas of the face usually need 5 to 8 sessions.
Sessions are spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart so the laser catches hair in its active growth phase. The exact interval is set by the specialist according to how fast your hair grows back.
The chin zone costs 1 000 CZK per session, the full face and neck 2 500 CZK. These are indicative prices per session — we confirm the exact amount according to the extent at the free consultation.
After a completed course it is a matter of years. The exact figure varies — everyone regenerates differently, which is why some clients benefit from a maintenance session.
The device cools the treated spot at the same moment as the laser pulse, so most clients feel only a mild tingling. For people with a low pain threshold we can also apply a numbing cream.
