Why do women grow hair on the chin?

Behind the growth of darker, stronger hair on a woman’s chin usually stands a raised level of male hormones, above all testosterone. The most common causes are hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hormonal swings in puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Genetic predisposition, certain illnesses and some medication have their share too.

Chin hair grows in women as fast as a man’s beard, which means daily upkeep by shaving or plucking. So this is not a cosmetic trifle — it is a worry that reliably chips away at confidence. The good news is that the causes are well described and hair removal now has a solution that does not repeat every morning.

The most common triggers at a glance:

  • Hirsutism — excessive hair growth in areas typical for men
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) — a hormonal disorder affecting how the ovaries work
  • Hormonal swings — puberty, pregnancy, menopause
  • Genetics — an inherited sensitivity of the follicles to male hormones
  • Medication and illness — some products and diseases shift hormone levels

What is hirsutism?

Hirsutism is a disorder in which women start growing hair in areas typical for men — on the face, chest, abdomen or back. It is caused by a raised level of male hormones in the body, especially testosterone.

There can be several causes: genetic predisposition, certain illnesses, taking particular medication or a hormonal imbalance. If you suspect hirsutism, it is important to consult a doctor who will recommend suitable treatment. Treatment options include hormonal therapy, medication to lower testosterone levels, and removing the hair that has already grown by epilation.

Can polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) be behind chin hair?

Yes, PCOS is one of the common causes. It is a hormonal disorder affecting how the ovaries work; women with this syndrome usually have a raised level of male hormones, which can lead to hair growth on the chin.

PCOS does not show only as hair growth, though. Other symptoms may accompany it:

  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • painful or excessive bleeding during menstruation
  • acne
  • excess weight and obesity
  • fertility problems

If you believe you have PCOS, see your doctor so they can help diagnose the condition and propose suitable treatment. That may involve lifestyle changes, hormonal treatment or even surgery.

When are hormonal swings to blame?

A hormonal imbalance leads to increased facial hair growth, including on the chin, most often in three periods: during puberty, in pregnancy and in menopause. In these phases the ratio of sex hormones in the body changes naturally.

If chin hair has appeared suddenly or is increasing quickly, it is important to consult a doctor and find the exact cause. A doctor can run tests, diagnose a possible hormonal imbalance or another health problem and recommend treatment — typically hormonal therapy or medication regulating hormone levels. Cosmetic hair removal deals with the consequence, not the cause, and one does not replace the other.

Lifestyle changes can help too. Excess weight leaves its mark on hormonal swings, so a balanced diet and regular exercise play their part. Stress and sleep quality also affect hormonal balance — which is why it pays to add a relaxation technique such as yoga, meditation or a regular walk, and to get enough sleep.

How do you get rid of chin hair? A comparison of methods

In short: shaving, wax, sugar paste and depilatory creams are cheap and available, but the result holds for days to weeks and often irritates the skin. Laser hair removal is the only one that acts directly on the root of the hair, and therefore gives a more lasting result.

Method How long the skin stays smooth What to watch out for
Shaving with a razor roughly 24 hours the hair returns quickly, risk of irritation and ingrowth
Waxing usually 2–3 weeks painful, poorly suited to sensitive facial skin
Sugar paste usually 2–3 weeks the same principle as wax, the hair may snap
Depilatory creams a few days the hair returns fast, risk of irritation
Laser hair removal a lasting reduction in growth, on the face 3–6 sessions on average several visits needed, a corrective treatment after some time

With methods that tear or cut the hair there is also the unpleasant risk that the new hair cannot cut through the skin and starts growing under it. How ingrown hairs show and what to do about them is described in detail in the article about ingrown hairs in the intimate area — the mechanism is the same on the face as elsewhere on the body.

How does laser hair removal of the chin work and how many sessions does it need?

The laser beam travels through the hair down to the root and destroys it with the delivered energy, so no new hair can grow from it. On the face 3 to 6 applications are needed on average; the exact number is set by the specialist according to the type of hair and skin. You will notice a reduction of hair after the very first session.

The treatment is carried out by an experienced practitioner certified to operate the laser, and eye protection is always part of it. Painlessness is ensured by the device’s cooling system, which numbs the treated area; a local anaesthetic can also be applied on request. Because the body is capable of regeneration, we recommend a corrective treatment after some time — in some spots the hair may reappear to a much smaller degree.

At the clinic we work with two types of laser: the diode LightSheer DUET for darker and tanned skin with stronger hair, and the alexandrite Deka Motus AX Moveo for light skin and fine hair. Which one suits your chin better is determined at the free consultation.

How do you prepare for facial epilation and what to follow afterwards?

The preparation is simple and takes a few minutes; after the treatment it is enough to protect the skin from the sun for a month.

Before a session:

  • do not sunbathe for at least a week (an older tan is fine, a fresh one is not)
  • shave the zone with a classic razor the day before the session
  • for a month beforehand do not pluck the hair with tweezers or use other epilation methods
  • do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before the procedure
  • do not apply cosmetics or make-up to the face

After a session:

  • the treated area may stay red for a few hours — that is normal
  • do not sunbathe for a month; in summer use a cream with SPF 50
  • do not apply cosmetics or make-up immediately after the treatment
  • with pronounced itching a doctor will prescribe a soothing ointment

Epilation is a safe method, but your health always has to be taken into account. Contraindications are pregnancy, breastfeeding, cancer, a tattoo in the treated area, epilepsy, an acute skin infection, rashes, blood clotting disorders and keloid scars. Discuss any doubts with the practitioner at the first consultation.

How much does removing chin hair cost?

The price follows the size and extent of the treated zone. The chin alone costs 1 000 CZK per session, the whole face with the neck 2 500 CZK.

Zone Price per session
Chin 1 000 CZK
Upper lip 1 000 CZK
Eyebrows 1 000 CZK
Full face + neck 2 500 CZK

We confirm the exact price according to the extent at the free consultation, where we also choose the right type of laser. A complete overview of zones and prices is on the page about facial laser hair removal.

What to take away

Hair growth on a woman’s chin usually has a hormonal background — hirsutism, PCOS or the natural swings of puberty, pregnancy and menopause. The first step should therefore be a consultation with a doctor who will examine the cause and, if necessary, propose treatment.

Alongside that you can deal with the hair itself. Common methods such as shaving, wax or creams work briefly and irritate the skin; laser hair removal is the only one that acts on the root of the hair and so offers long-term smooth skin without daily upkeep. At Laser Clinic we treat the face in Prague at three branches, daily from 9:00 to 21:00, and the first consultation is free.

Frequently asked questions

The most common cause is a raised level of male hormones, especially testosterone. Behind it stand hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome or hormonal swings in puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Genetic predisposition, certain illnesses and some medication also play a role.

On the face 3 to 6 applications are needed on average. The exact number is set by the specialist at the free consultation according to the type of hair and skin.

If the hair comes with irregular menstrual cycles, acne, excessive bleeding or fertility problems, consult a doctor. It may be a hormonal imbalance or PCOS, which needs to be examined and treated. Cosmetic hair removal does not replace treating the cause.

The laser has built-in cooling that numbs the treated area, so the procedure is bearable even on sensitive facial skin. A local anaesthetic can also be applied if needed.

Treating the chin costs 1 000 CZK per session, the whole face with the neck 2 500 CZK. A complete course usually requires 5 to 8 sessions.
