Hair on the buttocks: why it grows and how to remove it

Why does hair grow on the buttocks? Three main causes

Hair on the buttocks and around the anus is completely common in both women and men — this is an area where hair is usually firmer and denser than the fine down elsewhere on the body. How strong the growth will be comes down, in the vast majority of cases, to three reasons.

1. Physiology. Hair growth on the buttocks is a natural process, nothing abnormal. Hair appears on the buttocks and around the anal opening and occurs to a greater extent in men. In some cases, however, there is excessive growth or repeated ingrowth that can end in an inflamed sore. If that keeps happening to you, consult a dermatologist — they will recommend an approach based on the actual findings.

2. Genetics. The amount and structure of hair are genetically given and nothing can be done about the predisposition. All you can influence is how you deal with the result — and there are several options today.

3. Hormonal imbalance or treatment. Body hair growth is largely governed by hormones. If they are out of balance or you are undergoing hormonal treatment, hair may start growing even where it never grew before. Noticed a sudden change and take no medication? Consult your doctor — excessive growth can be a symptom of a more serious condition.

In women, more pronounced hair in areas typical for men — the face, chest, abdomen or back — tends to be caused by hirsutism, a disorder caused by a raised level of male hormones, especially testosterone. If the growth appeared suddenly or comes with irregular menstrual cycles or acne, have the cause examined by a doctor. Whatever the background, hair on the buttocks is a matter of personal preference, hygiene and comfort. If it does not grow inwards, it is purely about aesthetics — and many clients deal with it simply because they feel better with smooth skin.

Why is home depilation of the buttocks so problematic?

While on the legs you can use a whole range of methods and products at home, for the rear the choice is very limited. The biggest problem is that we simply cannot see back there — and the skin around the anal opening is very fine and sensitive, so there is a risk of injury that can cause further complications later.

That is precisely why some depilation practices are not recommended for this part of the body at all. Those who try anyway usually end up with a combination of cuts, irritation and ingrown hairs. If you do not want to give up shaving, at least stick to the basic rules:

• never shave dry skin — take a warm shower first
• use only sharp and hygienically clean trimmers or blades
• shave with the direction of hair growth, not against it
• after shaving apply a gentle moisturising cream or lotion

Which methods of removing hair on the buttocks come into question?

First one difference that decides everything else: depilation removes only the visible part of the hair, so it grows back practically immediately. The shared disadvantage of all classic methods is the same: they have to be repeated constantly, because the hair keeps growing back. Pulling it out with the root only stretches the interval between the repeats a little.

How does laser hair removal of the buttocks work?

The treatment takes only a few minutes and is done lying on a comfortable bed. The treated area is covered with hydrogel and the laser beam goes over the whole zone step by step.

The principle is simple: the laser acts on the melanin inside the hair, the light energy turns into heat and that destroys the hair follicle. The hair then falls out by itself and no new one grows from the damaged root — in up to 80 % of clients the hair does not reappear in the treated area, while in the remaining 20 % or so growth partly returns, but there is substantially less hair and it is lighter and weaker. A noticeable reduction is visible after the very first application.

If you are worried about pain, we can also calm the spot with an anaesthetic cream. Comfort is ensured above all by the cooling built right into the laser, which numbs the skin at that point — thanks to it even the area around the anal opening, which is very painful with other epilation methods, can be treated without trouble.

How many sessions are needed and how long does the result last?

Complete hair removal is achieved after 5 to 8 sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart. Visible results appear after the first visit, even though a single session cannot remove all the hair.

Why does the procedure have to be repeated? Hair on the human body does not grow everywhere at the same speed. In a few weeks the hair the laser could not reach yet grows out, and at the last session even the biggest latecomers get their turn.

How long the result lasts is always individual — it can be months up to one year. It depends on the type of hair, the hormonal background and how many sessions you completed.

Can hair growth on the buttocks be slowed down?

Only in certain cases, and it always depends on what causes the growth. If a hormonal imbalance is behind fast or excessive growth, the state can be reversed with suitable treatment — but that belongs in the hands of a doctor, not a beauty salon.

There are also creams for slowing growth; their effect is highly individual and again depends on the cause. In more complicated cases it pays to discuss the trouble with a specialist who can assess your condition in a broader context.

What to follow before and after the treatment?

The preparation and the aftercare are minimal, because this is not a demanding or invasive procedure.

Before a session:

• thorough hygiene in the days before the procedure goes without saying
• discuss your health and any contraindications at the free consultation

After laser hair removal:

• do not expose the treated area to direct sunlight for at least a month
• avoid hot baths, the sauna, solariums and thermal spas for a month
• do not use any cosmetics immediately after the application; later choose natural products without chemical additives
• if the skin itches slightly, a soothing cream or cooling with ice cubes helps
• wear loose, breathable clothing and protect the skin from friction and mechanical irritation
• avoid greater physical strain for two days after the procedure

The same rules, in a milder form, are worth following after shaving or waxing too: moisturise the skin regularly (ideally with natural cosmetics without parabens and silicones, since dry skin cracks easily), depilate after a shower when the skin is supple, and skip the sauna and hot baths for at least 24 hours. Does the laser also solve ingrown hairs on the buttocks?

Yes. Regrowing and ingrown hairs in the buttock area can cause a lot of trouble, and laser hair removal is the only method that takes them out of the game for good — a destroyed root has nothing to make a new hair from, so there is nothing to grow inwards.
